www.mrca.org — Midwest Roofer 21 I n recognition of the devotion given in his life to the industry, MRCA established the James Q. McCawley Award, which was first presented in 1969. Since then, this award has been presented to individuals in recognition for their outstanding service to the roofing industry. This year’s honor was awarded to James “Fred” Horner of Advanced Industrial Roofing, Inc. – Massillon, Ohio. Fred’s career began the day after his 18th birthday, when he joined the roofing trade in 1974. Just four years later, he completed Ohio’s roofing apprenticeship program and earned his Journeyman’s Certificate. After more than a decade of working for local roofing companies, he co-founded what has become one of the top 250 roofing companies in the United States—a company that today employs nearly 90 hardworking professionals and specializes in industrial and commercial roofing as well as architectural sheet metal. Fred’s leadership extends well beyond his business. He has served as President of the Midwest Roofing Contractors Association, sits on the MRCA Board of Directors and Executive Committee, and now chairs the HAWT Safety Training Program. He is also the current President of the Ohio Roofing Contractors Association and has been a strong voice on ORCA’s Safety, Insurance, and Legislative Committee. And his dedication doesn’t stop with our industry. In his hometown, Fred is a tireless volunteer—supporting high school athletics, serving on historical preservation efforts, engaging in local business and legislative initiatives, and remaining active in civic and fraternal organizations. This year’s recipient is the embodiment of what the McCawley Award represents: service and leadership in roofing.
