Piper of N.C.; Bill Pennock of Illinois; Art Biebel of Illinois; Julien Loeb of Louisiana; Bernie Schreamm, John Reuter, Bob Bubenzer, Clyde Scott, Myron Powell and C. L. Cockrell served tirelessly along with scores of others too numerous to list.These men not only recruited new members, organized state and city chapters, worked with labor unions, lobbied for the Taft-Hartley law, worked on apprenticeship programs, plus many other necessary and effective industry measures.Early Industry ManufacturesManufacturers have also played a great part in the growth of both the roofing and building industry and the industry associations.Research staff men work on new products and on developing and perfecting new materials.engineers produce new equipment to mechanize and simplify the work to alleviate the labor shortage, and to cut installation costs. Some of the early pioneers whose influence is still felt by the industry are:Joseph Honhorst Company, an early advertiser in the American Roofer who sold his interest in roofing kettles to the Littleford Brothers, The Eastern Granite Roofing Co. of New York and Chicago, The U.S. Mica Co., Chicago, The Inlaid Slate Co., Pen Argyl, Pa., Bermingham and Seaman, Chicago, Lehon Company, The Ford Mfg. Co., Elaborated Roofing Co., Barrett Mfg. Co.,Asphalt Reading Roofing Co., Johns-Manville Corp., The Phillip Carey Mfg. Co., The Ruberoid Company, Warren-Ehret Company, Paraffine Co., J. A. & W. Bird and Son, Roofbestos Company, National Elastic Roofing Co., and many others. Some of these firms are no longer in existence and others have been merged into what is known today as a conglomerate.Many famous names are being obliterated today, assuming a new parent company identification.The roofing industry has just completed its early growth stages, and is on the brink of great changes to come.
