He is also the author of a textbook, which he was currently engaged in revisingfor the 4th edition.The Los Angeles Times once described Jim McCawley as the man who knew more about roofing that anyone else in the world .It would be more accurate to state that James McCawley is better know than anyone else in the world as far as the roofing industry is concerned.McCawley emigrated from Scotland in 1923, worked as a harvest hand, building laborer and lumberjack in Canada, before crossing to the United States where he worked as a roofer during the day, while attending New York University at night.His talents and experiences since that time were fascinating and varied as he worked at being Farmer, Roofing Contractor, Author, Educator, Organizer, Politician, Inventor, Editor and Executive. He became a naturalized citizen in 1930 and with his wry sense of humor was fond of stating, I am 100% American in 65 of my pounds and 100% Naturalized American in 165 of my pounds, therefore, I am 200% American and that is more than most native born Americans can say. Jim McCawley, a devoted family man, is survived by a son, James Jr., professor of Linguistics at Chicago University, who is on his own road to worldwide prominence, lecturing coast to coast and for this fall has accepted a temporary teaching assignment in Sweden.Jims daughter, Monica, nurse, interrupted her career for marriage and motherhood.Caroline, the youngest daughter, has worked diligently for the past 8 months in the ABC circulation department.A son, John (better known as Rickie) died in 1951 from Leukemia, as Jims friends will remember.His wife, Dr. Monica McCawley, preceded him in death eight years ago.
