Thereasonfortheresponseis ,ofcourse,obvioustheoverall excellenceoftheconventionprogram.Astheyearprogresses,we willbepublishinginthepagesofthisbulletinsomeoftheinformationdevelopedattheconvention. OneoftheconventionheadlinerswasWilliamC.Cullenofthe NationalBureauofStandardstowhomweareindebtedforthefollowingtechnicalreportrecentlypublishedbytheu.s.Departmentof Commerce. PREMATUREFAILURESOFBUILT-UPROOFSYSTEMS Astudyofbuilt- uproofsystemshasrecentlybeencompletedby WilliamC.CullenoftheNationalBureauofStandards,u.s.DepartmentofCommerce.Theobjectofthestudy,whichwassponsoredby theArmy,Navy ,andAirForce ,wastodeterminethemagnitudeof temperaturechangesandlinearmovementsoftheroof-systemcompo= nents.Thesechanges,duetosolarheatingandradiativecooling, havebeenfoundinfieldobservationstobemajorcausesforthe prematurefailureofbuilt-uproofsystemswhichiscostingthe Nationmillionsofdollarsannually. Built-uproofsystemsarewidelyusedintheUnitedStatesand othercountriesonlargebuildingshavingrelativelyflatroofs (lessthantwoinchesofslopeperfoot)suchasofficebuildings , warehouses,andfactories.Thebuilt- uproofsystemconsistsof severallayersorcomponents.The isthebasecomponentupon deck whichawaterprooflayer(themembrane)isplaced.Alayerofinsulationmaybeplacedbetweenthedeckandthemembrane.Thefinal component,theprotectivesurface,isthenplacedoverthemembrane.
