28 I Winter 2018 www.anjc.info www.njchiropractors.com I 29 Update Chiro Assist TECHNIQUE Council Q&A S C H O L ARSHIP WI N N E R S Time for an Ethics Self-Check By Dr. Michelle Turk Ethics are defined as a philoso- phy of right and wrong conduct. Profes- sional ethics are the personal, organizational and corporate standards of behavior expected from professionals. Professionals, which of course include all those who work in a chiropractic office, are capable of and expected to make judgments and decisions that the general public is not necessarily expected to, based on their knowledge and skills. In other words, professionals in a chiropractic office are held to a higher ethical standard than the general public. Are ethics something that can really be learned, or are they something that we simply have or don’t? Some might argue that ethics are subjec- tive, yet licensing boards in each state have ethical standards that licensees are bound to. There are several ethical principles that I believe all would agree are standard for chiropractic profes- sionals, including equality, service to others, privacy, accuracy, security and accountability. As an ethics “self-check” there are several questions I suggest chiro- practic professionals ask themselves: P Am I non-judgmental of patients, colleagues and people in my community? P Do I maintain my patients’ privacy at all times? P Do I treat all people equally? P Do I put service to others first? P Do I give my all and show up as best as possible? P Do I maintain appropriate bound- aries with patients and team members? P Am I accountable to patients and team members? P Do I communicate honestly? P Are fees and billing congruent? And most importantly: Do I make the same choices if someone is or is not watching? If any of the above questions cannot be answered “yes,” then perhaps it is time for self-reflection on your ethical standards. At the end of the day, our adherence to strict professional ethics is about so much more than protecting our practices. Of course that matters, but practicing with the strictest of professional ethics allows us to feel the greatest satisfaction from what we accomplish. It not always the easier road, but it is the most fulfilling one.
