We are working to introduce legislation similar to West Virginia’s that will mandate drug-prescribing practitioners who “shall refer or prescribe to a patient any of the following treatment alternatives, based on the practitioner’s clinical judgment and the availability of the treatment, before starting a patient on an opioid: physical therapy, occupational therapy, acupuncture, massage therapy, osteopathic manipulation, chronic pain management program, and chiropractic services…” West Virginia’s just-signed new law goes on to state “At a minimum, an insurance provider who offers an insurance product in this state, the Bureau for Medical Services, and the Public Employees Insurance Agency shall provide coverage for 20 visits per event of physical therapy, occupational therapy, osteopathic manipulation, a chronic pain management program, and chiropractic services…” Chiropractic “The Quack Profession” That Got It Right All Along From the very beginning of our history many chiropractors would promote “chiropractic first, drugs second, surgery last.” We have promoted a healthy lifestyle, eating good nutrition, getting more rest. We have told people they have a great chance of getting better without drugs and surgery through chiropractic care, and yet we were chastised as quacks, outcasts, charlatans and worse. Now that there is a declared opioid crisis with thousands and thousands of people overdosing and/or dying, the time for chiropractic care to step forward and lead the way is here. ANJC is doing our part to get the message out to save lives and we need each and every chiropractor in the State of New Jersey to do the same in your office with each and every patient. You may never know how many lives you have saved. “...the over-prescribing of pain/opioid medications has led to a nationwide epidemic...”
