Treatment at the center is designed to help patients heal not just physically, but spiritually, to help them discover what they enjoy in life. “What are you going to do for fun now that the drugs are gone,” Hansen said. “That’s what you can do all the time when you are clean.” Activities include art, yoga, horseback riding, organic gardening, fishing, surfing and paddle boarding among others. The program incorporates therapies ranging from chiropractic, acupuncture and Reiki to EAGALA (equine therapy) into a recovery approach based on a more tradi- tional 12-step plan. Ideally, patients will leave Enlightened Solutions for a sober living facility, said Hansen. “The longer we keep someone in sober living or treatment, the better their longtime success” she said. “If they stay in sober living for a year, most times they stay clean for a long time.” In addition to the Hansen Foundation’s Serenity Houses, it has an organic farm and café. Most of the employees are resi- dents or graduates of the sober living homes. Hansen said Enlight- ened Solutions hosts reunions every other month and routinely has 150 alumni attend. “Many of our clients say they’ve never been to a treatment center like it,” she said. “The program has been designed with a chiropractor – at the dinner table,” said Hansen. “This is our life. We live it and we talk about it all the time. We’re in it.”
